Anti-discriminatory practice

W C B   N E will be committed to the principals of equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice for all people irrespective of race, culture, religion, gender, language, disability, sexual orientation, or social/family background and will actively support initiatives that are designed to further this principle.

Our approach will be that all children or young people should be able to live in an environment free from oppressive practices and where positive relationships with families, staff and peers are encouraged and nurtured.

As an organisation we actively seek to re-educate and inform people in relation to discriminatory practise when they are witnessed to promote the encouragement of an inclusive environment.

Equality

Treating children and young people fairly and without prejudice is central to our values, ethos and practice. At W C B   N E our aim is to ensure that children and young people feel respected and valued. At W C B   N E we have a positive culture of non-discriminatory practice, and this is always at the forefront of our practice. The staff teamwork in ways that are consistent with and supportive of the Children Act 1989, Children's Homes Regulations, Children and Social Work Act 2017, Care Standards Act 2000 and Quality Standards 2015.

At W C B   N E we want children and young people to be heard, and we will support them to express their views in 1.1 sessions, we will use a range of communication methods appropriate to the needs of the child or young person

Rights

We have a commitment to children's rights and entitlements as set out in The Children Act 1989, The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Equality act 2010 and the human rights act 1998.

Surveillance

The child or young person will be monitored according to their individual care and placement plan.

The child or young person will be monitored by the staff team carrying out their daily activities and routines identify any areas of concern, also to identify areas where the child/ young person is developing their social skills. This is carried out in the least invasive way possible to allow children and young people to interact freely.

If there is a specific high risk to the child/ young person this will be monitored closely. Where there are concerns that these risks are jeopardising the safety of the child or young person a care team meeting will be convened to discuss how the risks can be best managed.

Therapeutic techniques

During the pre-placement assessment any required therapeutic techniques and services, deemed necessary to holistically support the child or young person will be identified. The Team Manager will identify where W C B   N E is able to meet that need as part of the package delivered to the child or young person or whether outside specialists will be accessed as needed.

All therapeutic services provided will be done by a competent and trained professional. Any other external service utilised; checks will be carried out prior to therapy to ensure members are Chartered Psychologists with the British Psychological Society and adhere to the Society's Code of Conduct or are registered as a Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and have suitable up to date Enhanced DBS checks.

Should a child or young person be involved by a therapeutic service, the Team Manager, Deputy manager and the team will work closely with the provider. This will include invites to staff meetings to share additional knowledge, and techniques individualised to the child. All information from assessments and consultations will be incorporated into the child's placement plans and behaviour management plans to ensure any recommended strategies are embedded into daily practices. All staff who work within W C B   N E will be trained in PACE, therapeutic parenting training, by an external provider who will provide knowledge around working with the children or young person therapeutically. This will be embedded into practices within the organisation.

Children will be encouraged to take part in activities which are enjoyable and programmes to promote life skills. These may include activities such as travel, shopping, and cooking, as well as personal care. Risk assessments will always be undertaken before an activity is agreed and the child/young person's care plan will outline their likes and dislikes regarding activities.

Cultural and Religious Beliefs

Children and young people will be actively supported in practising their own religious beliefs, the team around the child or young person will support them with their spiritual development and this includes attending religious services, an appropriate diet if required and the wearing of suitable clothing/dress. The child/ young person will be supported to attend any religious services, rituals, and festivals. The team at W C B   N E will work closely with the child or young person and their Guardian to ensure that their cultural needs are met and respected.

Staff will be educated to understand any religious beliefs systems followed by the child/ young person to maximise the inclusive and holistic support of the child.
